Today, at the V Conference of the Almaty City Branch of the “Baytaq” Green Party, a historic and profoundly significant decision was announced. Party Chairman Azamatkhan Amirtayev officially declared the nomination of distinguished Kazakh writer, public figure, and founder of the anti-nuclear movement “Nevada–Semey,” Olzhas Suleimenov, for the Nobel Peace Prize.
This initiative reflects not only national recognition but also global appreciation of Suleimenov’s exceptional contribution to peace and nuclear security. His pivotal role in the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site marked a turning point in the fight against nuclear weapons. The “Nevada–Semey” movement, led by him, became a decisive force that influenced one of the most consequential political decisions in modern history.
Moreover, thanks to his efforts and Kazakhstan’s active international diplomacy, four additional major nuclear test sites around the world — including one in the U.S. state of Nevada — were shut down. This achievement stands as a monumental contribution to strengthening global security and reducing nuclear threats.
As Azamatkhan Amirtayev emphasized, Olzhas Suleimenov is not only a cultural pillar of the Kazakh nation but also one of the world’s most influential voices for peace. His nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize represents an act of historical justice and a tribute to his lifelong dedication to the cause of a safer world.
Representatives of the party expressed confidence that this initiative will further elevate Kazakhstan’s international standing and reinforce the country’s long-standing commitment to global peace and security.
