Press announcement
November 16, 2023 at 11.00 at the Silteme press club, Astana, st. Dostyk 3, a press conference of the Green Party “Baytak” will be held on the topic: “Together to the result. Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation: important results in two months of work.”
The Kazakhstan Green Party “Baytak”, acting in the wake of the policies of President Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich Tokayev, complements the reforms carried out by the authorities. So, according to the Presidential Address, on September 1, 2023, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation was created. On the eve of August 17, 2023, an international round table was held on the initiative of the Baytak green party, at which this was proposed by the expert community.
11.1 cubic kilometers of water will flow into the Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions into the Shardara reservoir until April 1, 2024. An agreement with neighboring countries was reached by the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, who noted that only through joint efforts can we ensure the reasonable use and saving of water resources in Central Asia.
Discussions took place on November 2, 2023 in Tashkent at the 85th meeting of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission (ICWC), within the framework of which Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan signed a protocol on the forecast mode of operation of the cascade of reservoirs in the Syrdarya and Amudarya river basins, and also approved limits on water intake for the non-growing season 2023-2024. The next, 86th meeting of the ICWC will be held in Kazakhstan early next year.
The expected water intake through the Dostyk interstate canal is 487 million cubic meters. This will allow accumulating the necessary volume of water for the growing season of 2024 in the Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions, as well as supplying 1.6 billion cubic meters of water to the Aral Sea.
In addition, ICWC members instructed the Syrdarya BWO to monitor the operation of the cascade of reservoirs in the river basin and, in case of deviations from the forecast, to immediately inform Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The speakers will tell you more about this and other results at a joint press conference.
