On January 23, 2026, a meeting of the Council of Elders of the Baytaq Green Party of Kazakhstan was held in Almaty. The meeting was attended by the party leadership, members of the Council of Elders, and representatives of science, culture, education, and civil society.
The meeting was opened by the Chairman of the Baytaq Green Party, Azamatkhan Amirtayev. The main topic of the agenda was the initiative to nominate the prominent Kazakh poet, thinker, diplomat, and public figure Olzhas Omarovich Suleimenov for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. In his speech, the party chairman emphasized Suleimenov’s historic role in the global anti-nuclear movement and stated that his candidacy fully meets the international criteria of the Nobel Peace Prize.
During the meeting, the establishment of an International Organizing Committee to support the nomination of Olzhas Suleimenov was officially announced. Azamatkhan Amirtayev was appointed Chairman of the Committee. The Committee includes members of parliaments, professors and academics from leading universities, and representatives of international organizations, research institutions, diplomatic, and cultural communities from Kazakhstan and abroad.
Information was also presented on the submission of official nomination letters to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. To date, a total of 25 nomination letters have been sent, signed by representatives of leading scientific and educational institutions of Kazakhstan, as well as by public figures and scholars from Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, the United States, and other countries. Efforts to expand international support are ongoing.
As part of the meeting, another nomination letter was signed and officially handed over for delivery to Oslo in accordance with established procedures.
In addition, the meeting discussed the initiative to establish the “Olzhas Studies” Research Institute. The institute will focus on the comprehensive academic study of Olzhas Suleimenov’s creative, public, and political legacy, as well as the systematization and international promotion of his ideas on peace and nuclear security.
The meeting also reviewed the Baytaq Party’s activities and priorities for 2026. Following the meeting, Irak Elekeev was elected Chairman of the Council of Elders, and a corresponding resolution was adopted.
